Nottingham Children’s Hospital Wins 2021 ANCC Pathway Award®
The award was presented at the 2021 ANCC National Magnet Conference® and the ANCC Pathway to Excellence Conference® in Atlanta. It honors a project proposal in a Pathway to Excellence®-designated organization that creates a positive nurse practice environment using innovation and technology.
NCH will use the $50,000 purse to develop its winning proposal and report outcomes at next year’s Pathway to Excellence Conference®.
Family Activation of the Pediatric Critical Care Outreach Team is designed to improve patient safety and quality of care while reducing avoidable harm. Nurses will develop and implement a multilingual application families can use to monitor their sick child. This will be co-designed and developed with children and their families, initially piloted within the Children’s Hospital. This aims to empower families through technology to escalate concerns by activating a rapid response that initiates further assessment and rescue intervention from staff. This will be piloted at NCH with the intention of wider implementation for families across the Integrated Care System.
“With this application, families will be involved and empowered to participate in the recognition and rescue of their child in the hospital with the potential to implement in the community and other settings across the care system,” said Michelle Rhodes, MSc, RN, Dip DN, Chief Nursing Officer, Nottingham University Hospitals.
This innovative approach to health care delivery is driven by NCH’s desire to continually provide high-quality care above and beyond the Pathway to Excellence® Practice Standards. It takes into consideration the hospital’s commitment to deliver ‘safety culture together’ care, which incorporates the views and perceptions of the consumer. Because the app is multilingual, it not only has the potential to impact outcomes in NCH’s service area, but also globally.
