At Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) we are passionate about supporting people into careers within healthcare. We have some excellent development options and routes into nursing including clinical apprenticeships. You can find more information about these apprenticeships below.

HCA Apprenticeships Level 2 and Level 3

What is this?

Both the level 2 Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship and the level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship lead to a QCF qualification. Following completion and success with the end point assessment, apprentices can choose to apply for a substantive post as a HCA or to continue their education and career development. 

Entry Requirements

Must be able to demonstrate the ability to work at level 2 and demonstrate an understanding of care.

What do we do?

At NUH we have a dedicated Clinical Trainer team to support our HCA Apprentices. Regular study sessions, clinical observations and progress reviews are completed to support completion of the apprenticeship and prepare for the End Point Assessment.

Trainee Nursing Associate Apprenticeship Level 5

What is this?

The Nursing Associate role was developed to support the Registered Nurse workforce with the increased pressures and demand.

The course divides work placed learning with university-led study and placements across different nursing settings. A level 5 qualification is achieved on completion along with professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The Nursing Associate role is a role within its own right however, there is also opportunities to convert to a Registered Nurse post-qualification.

Essential Entry requirements

  • Maths and English GSCE A-C or 9-4 or Functional skills level 2
  • Experience working as a HCA

What do we do?

At NUH we have a dedicated Clinical Educator for our Trainee Nursing Associates. Regular supplementary teaching sessions are provided along with clinical observations and progress reviews.

AP or NA to Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship Level 6

What is this?

This opportunity allows those who have already undertaken the Assistant Practitioner or Nursing Associate apprenticeship to convert their registration to become a Registered Nurse. This programme runs for 2 years for Assistant Practitioners and 18 months for Nursing Associates to fulfil NMC requirements.

Essential Entry requirements

  • Maths and English GSCE A-C or 9-4 or Functional skills level 2
  • Foundation Degree Science Assistant Practitioner or Nursing Associate

What do we do?

Our AP/NA Conversion Degree Apprentices are supported by the Wider Workforce Team through monthly catch-up sessions, resilience-based clinical supervision whilst on placement and through regular tripartite meetings with the university.

Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship Level 6

What is this?

This apprenticeship runs as part of our nursing pipeline, it aids those who aspire to become a Registered Nurse. This course is run in partnership with Nottingham Trent University.

Those on this course undertake the same learning and placements as traditional student nurses, however as an apprentice a salary is received and course fees are paid for. Support is additionally available from the Institute of Care Excellence's Undergraduate Practice Education Team through-out the course.

Entry requirements

  • Maths and English GSCE A-C or 9-4 or Functional skills level 2
  • 112 UCAS points or 96 UCAS points and experience as working in healthcare

What do we do?

Our Registered Nurse Degree Apprentices are supported by the Undergraduate Practice Education Team through monthly catch-up sessions, resilience-based clinical supervision whilst on placement and through regular tripartite meetings with the university.

Graduate Entry Nursing Level 7

What is this?

This apprenticeship runs as part of our nursing pipeline, and runs in partnership with the University of Derby. We are proud to support those with a previous degree to fulfil their dream of become a Registered Nurse.

Those on this course undertake the same learning and placements as traditional graduate entry student nurses, however as an apprentice a salary is received and course fees are paid for. Support is additionally available from the Institute of Care Excellence's Undergraduate Practice Education Team through-out the course.

Essential Entry requirements

  • Maths and English GSCE A-C or 9-4 or Functional skills level 2

  • Previous degree 2:2 minimum

  • 450 Hours experience in a healthcare environment

Our Graduate Entry Nursing Apprentices are supported by the Undergraduate Practice Education Team through monthly catch-up sessions, resilience-based clinical supervision whilst on placement and through regular tripartite meetings with the university.
