First Ethnic Minority Clinical Academic Career Development Programme

The Institute of Care Excellence at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, in collaboration with the Florence Nightingale Foundation (FNF) is pleased to have launched a clinical academic development opportunity for Nurses, Midwives and AHPs (NMAHPs) from ethnic minorities who are interested in pursuing a clinical academic career (CAC).

The Ethnic Minority Clinical Academic Career Development Programme, which launched on the 4th November 2021, was developed in response to a regionally acknowledged lack of representation and success in applications from people from ethnic minority backgrounds.

The six day course which runs for five months, from November 2021 to March 2022 covers; research design skills, leadership development based on the highly successful Florence Nightingale Foundation Windrush Programme, and support and mentorship in pursuing a clinical academic career.

The programme has already received positive feedback from attendees and facilitators.

Simone Morrison, a Senior Radiotherapy Radiographer said: ‘’I applied to the development programme as it is an amazing opportunity to further my academic career ambitions. My managers in Radiotherapy have given their full support and I am excited to be on a programme specifically created to tackle the underrepresentation of people like me in research.’’

Rachele Arthur, Staff Nurse said: ‘’The aim of this programme is perfect and I am so pleased that people from ethnic backgrounds are being listened, supported and helped to get to places we are not usually seen in. I’m so excited I’ve been given the opportunity to be part of this programme and I am looking forward to the next few sessions.’’
