24 Hours in A&E Series 1 Episode 14 – Blood, Sweat and Tears
“Ay up me duck.” Emergency Department (ED) nurse Christine introduces us to the hardworking staff and patients of Nottingham, in the latest episode of 24 Hours in A&E.
Christine had high ambitions of working in ED. As a single parent to two children, she put herself through college to get her nursing qualification and finally achieved her dream seven years ago.
The next episode airs on Monday 25 March at 9pm on Channel 4. The award-winning documentary returns from its home at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust’s (NUH) Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) - one of the busiest A&E departments in the country. A place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every single day.
55-year-old Chris is rushed into QMC after his leg was crushed by a twelve-tonne lorry at work. Doctors are worried that not only has his leg been broken, but he may have developed a rare condition caused by the injury that can lead to amputation.
65-year-old Elizabeth has come into minors after falling whilst cleaning a pub. She’s with her 19-year-old granddaughter Tia. As Elizabeth is stitched up, we hear how much of a support Elizabeth has been to Tia.
Coal mining was an important part of Nottingham’s history and retired miner Alan is in minors after falling on a dog walk. As the team at QMC X-ray his face and dress his wounds, we hear about his time down the mine aged 15 and how he and his pit pony Morris, got through the days in the pitch black.
During September and October 2021, the Trust welcomed cameras into the Emergency Department at QMC for the first series to be filmed outside of London.
A total of 24 programmes were recorded and the first episodes were broadcast last year. You can catch up on previous episodes, including last week’s, at channel4.com.
Cameras returned to QMC in May 2023 to film another series of the award-winning documentary.
