24 Hours in A&E Series 1 Episode 12 – About A Boy
The next brand-new episode of 24 Hours in A&E airs on Tuesday 5 March at 9pm on Channel 4. This episode reveals stories of childhood: from growing up with autism, being one of nine siblings; and being a little brother brought up by an older sister after a family tragedy.
The RTS award-winning documentary returns from its home at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust’s (NUH) Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) - one of the busiest A&E departments in the country. A place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every single day.
15-year-old James has been rushed to QMC after being struck in the eye with an arrow during a holiday archery class. Mum, Sara, tells us how James was diagnosed with autism aged seven. Dr Ian who treats him, also shares his own neurodiversity experience, and the difficulties he faced growing up and how he’s recently been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder.
Joiner Chris has split his head open on a door frame and is being seen in the urgent treatment unit. He grew up as one of nine and tells us how despite the challenges they faced, his mum taught him his most important lesson in life – how to love. Chris shares his injuries and treatment with his 20,000 social media followers.
70-year-old Jim is in resus after an accident where he flipped his car onto its roof. Whilst doctors treat his injuries, his brother Terry tells us how close he was to his older sister, Carol, who cared for them both as children.
During September and October 2021, the Trust welcomed cameras into the Emergency Department at QMC for the first series to be filmed outside of London.
A total of 24 programmes were recorded and the first episodes were broadcast last year. You can catch up on previous episodes at channel4.com.
Cameras returned to QMC in May 2023 to film another series of the award-winning documentary.
