24 Hours in A&E Episode 2 - Husbands and Wives

Episode 2 of the new series of 24 Hours in A&E, filmed at the Queen’s Medical Centre, airs tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm.

The RTS award-winning documentary returns for its first ever series outside London.
Its new home, Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, is one of the busiest A&E departments in Europe. The series, which was produced by The Garden TV, was filmed for 47 days straight in autumn 2021 in the hospital’s Emergency Department, a place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every single day.

This episode hears the stories of three wives and the life journeys they have had with their husbands. We hear from a devoted wife living with her husband's physical and medical needs, a couple on how they reacted upon learning about their children’s deafness and a hospital receptionist moving onto a new chapter of her life after her husband was diagnosed with cancer.

74-year-old Mick is rushed to Queen’s Medical Centre with suspected sepsis. As doctors try to uncover what's causing this life-threatening condition, we hear from his wife Dot as she tells us what life is like as his full-time carer, dealing with his chronic health condition.

58-year-old Keith arrives in resus with an extremely fast heart rate. As medical staff urgently try to bring his heart rate down, we hear from his wife Mandy as she tells us what life was like bringing up their two deaf children and being diagnosed with the ‘deaf gene’.

61-year-old Gillian has come into A&E after a fall following a fundraising evening for the hospital.  She tells us of the devastating and difficult news that rocked her life when her husband was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer.

We also hear Iona's story, a Clinical Support Worker in our ED department who joined us at the age of just 18. You can find out more about Iona and her story here 24 Hours in A&E episodes | NUH

A total of 24 episodes were filmed for the new series and the first 8 episodes will run every Tuesday until 21 February on Channel 4 at 9pm.
